I’ll admit, there are pros and cons to two creatives sharing a life and home together. One of the main cons is that the house can feel like a tornado of neurosis, especially when you’re both deep in the throes of launching projects at the same time (currently lol). But one of the major upsides is when you get to collaborate on an endeavor. That’s the magic that makes all the other insanity worth it.
My partner Casey is a film and TV composer whose main gig is inventing virtual instruments for other music makers to use in their compositions. It comes in handy. He wrote the Sounds Like A Cult theme music, the grooviest ear worm in podcasting imho. But even better than that, he just wrote the intro music to my audiobook for The Age of Magical Overthinking. I didn’t even realize audiobook music was a thing… I don’t think either of my other two audiobooks had special intro music… but as I was recording my audiobook, shooting the shit with my director, Casey naturally came up. And my director mentioned that if I wanted, I could forego the minute of stock music they usually use at the very beginning of the audiobook as the book’s the title and author are announced, and instead ask Casey to write something bespoke. What makes this so special is that I dedicated the book to Casey, which I’d kept a secret until recently. He’s a main character in the second half of the book, but also so many of the topics covered are subjects I know he’s personally interested in. So who better to compose the very first sounds you hear when you press play on The Age of Magical Overthinking?
As an exclusive preview just for you newsletter subs, I wanted to share this gorgeous composition. Casey captured the book perfectly! I also interviewed him about for a couple minutes as we ate lunch the other day. Hope you enjoy!
