Of all the delectable topics I got to research for Cultish, the linguistics of glossolalia (aka, “speaking in tongues”) had to be my favorite. The fact that there are really groups out there jumping around, spewing gibberish, and calling it divine was something I simply couldn’t resist interrogating. To my delight, I was able to find one (just one!) linguist who’s currently doing research on the matter.
