If music fans get excited when an artist reveals the track list for their new album, I figured why not do the same for a book! I pour a ton of thought into my chapter titles—I want people to read each one and think, I HAVE to read what that’s all about! The vibe for this TOC was a bit different than my last two books—because I had so much freedom in the book to follow my curiosities wherever they took me, the same went for the chapter titles. While the Wordslut chapter names were extremely nerdy and cheeky (e.g. “Slutty Skanks and Nasty Dykes: A Comprehensive List of Gendered Insults I Hate (but Also Kind of Love?”) and the Cultish section titles were more ~mysterious~ (“Even YOU Can Learn to Speak in Tongues,” etc.), I wanted every chapter of this book to feel smart and surprising—like, say, by taking a formal academic phrase and giving it a pop culture twist. This book is all about juxtapositions: between head and heart, urgency and importance, truth and beauty, weight and levity, etc. So I wanted that feeling to be present in the chapter titles. Plus, I just wanted them to be really fun.
